Dodgers have turned season around
The four original teams located east of the Hillsbourgh Bridge have dominated the Kings County Baseball League all season. Lately one of the teams from the other side of the bridge has been playing just as well and maybe even better.
The Sherwood Dodgers won their seventh game of the season and are quickly moving up the standings.
The team has received production from their younger players and veterans. Will Jadis may be the fastest runner in the league and has played center field like an all star.
Jadis is tied for the league in stolen bases. Alan MacGuigan and Jamie Smith have been excellent as of late in the pitching department.
MacGuigan has lived off speed pitches all season and has kept the big fastball hitters off key all season.
Mike Waugh has did a good job as playing coach and has done a fine defensively job down at first base.
The Dodgers split a pair of games with the league leading Stratford Pharmacy on Sunday. Alan MacGuigan tossed a complete game four hitter. The winning run was scored by the Dodgers in the bottom of the fifth inning when Robbie MacLeod doubled home Colin Sherren from first base. Kyle MacDougall pitched the Pharmacy to the win in game two. Adam Smith had three hits including a double.
Sherwood improves their record to 7-11 and have a firm grip on sixth place in the KCBL standings.
Peakes Bombers have quietly stayed in contention all season and are sitting in a second place tied with the Morell Chevies. The Bombers have a hectic schedule ahead as they still have nine games remaining and the season is scheduled to end on August 12.
The Chevies are tied with the Bombers at 14-5 and have seven games left. Stratford is still alone at the top but have only a half game lead. The Pharmacy’s record is 14 -4 with eight games remaining. Northside Brewers ran into a little difficultly over the weekend losing a pair to PEI Youth Selects.
The Brewers record drops to 14-6 and sit firmly in fourth place in the standings. The Brewers have only six games remaining.
The league has decided to extend the season to at least one more week to help get their hectic finish completed.
Peakes Tee won their ninth and tenth games of the season and have a solid grip on fifth place.
Carter McGrath had five hits to lead the offense in the two games. The Sluggers cooled off the PEI Youth Selects 5-3 last Tuesday and defeated Paderno Pirates 7-5 on Sunday.
The Paderno Pirates have struggled all year and now sit all alone in the bottom of the standings. Andrew Arsenault has done his part. Arsenault went 2/4 with a double in the loss to the Sluggers.
The Cornwall Mud Hens won their third game of the season and are a full two games up on the last play-off spot. Tyler Jonhston and Steve Gould have been solid batters all season for the Hens.
Charlottetown Cannons have loss their last three games and are alone in seventh place. Harrison Carmichael and Rob Chandler have led this squad with the bat and Chad McKay has been their best pitcher.
Future games... some huge games Wednesday evening. Morell Chevies are in Peakes in a battle of second place clubs. Northside Brewers will try to bounce back when they travel to Stratford to play the Pharmacy.
Both games begin at 6:30. Also at 6:30 the Cannons are at Memorial field to play the Pirates in a must win for the Pirates. At 8:30 at Memorial the Dodgers hope to gain ground on the Sluggers when they host Peakes Tee at Memorial Field.
On Friday the Sluggers play a single game against PEI. On Sunday, the Brewers play their second game in a row against Stratford in Morell at 3 pm. The Pirates face a tough task as they meet the Chevies in Morell at 5 pm. At 2pm in Peakes, the Bombers take on the Sherwood Dodgers.
Dominoe’s “Pizza Player of the Week” is Carter McGrath of the Peakes Tee Sluggers. In two games last week, McGrath went 5/6 with a double and a home run and three rbi’s.
Trivia... Garret VanDiepen hit his fourth triple of the season Friday night against PEI Youth Selects. He is one triple shy of tying a KCBL record for most triples in a season. Who holds that record?
