Peakes Bombers winning with grit
The Peakes Bombers are at the top of the Kings County Baseball League.
Its been a team effort all year and their secret to winning may be just sticking together. Nobody is among the leaders’ stats wise, but this is a team that usually shows up with the same players each year and they all give what is asked of them.
The Bombers won two more games over the week. Rob Phelan won his seventh decision on Wednesday defeating the Morell Chevies on a three hit 3-0 shutout win.
They followed it up on Sunday bombing the Sherwood Dodgers 10-0. Josh Coffin earned the team’s second straight shutout win by tossing a one hitter.
Lead off batter Colin Myers, once again leads the team in most offensive categories. Myers tops the team charts at bats, runs, hits, doubles, walks and stolen bases and batting average.
Following Myers in the batting order again this year is Matt Bradley, who is back on track after a slow start has raised his batting average to .385. Joe Gardiner backs third and he too is having a better second half. He has the team’s second best average at .421.
Steve Birt and Rob Phelan have shared the clean up position Phelan leads the team with three home runs and twelve RBI’s.
Trevor McAree, who hits around the six hole leads the team with a pair of triples. Matt MacDonald provides leadership and is batting over.300. He shares the catching duties with newcomer Brandon MacInnis. MacInnis may be the missing piece of the puzzle for the Bombers. He has established himself as one of the best defensive catchers in the league.
Adam MacSwain is batting .375 and for my recollection never makes an error in left field. Grant MacEwan is still a steady first baseman and, along with Neil Morrison and Perry Birt’s return, that gives the team some bench depth.
Josh Coffin bats around .275 and along with Stephen Birt and Phelan does the job at handling the pitching duties. Newcoimers Brent MacKinnon and Cobb are young and the future of the team.
Jeremy MacDonald and Dwayne Smith have worked together with the coaching duties.
Seeing that this team brings the same players back each year, that says they players are comfortable with the way the do has led the team. The Bombers just like to come to the ball field to have fun but play competitively.
Stratford Pharmacy kept pace with the Bombers on Sunday as they outscored the struggling Northside Brewers 12-8. Adam Smith and Josh Toombs each had three hits apiece for Stratford. The Pharmacy is a half game behind the Bombers. Randy Taylor and Marshall Ellis have been the usual three/four hitters on the team and both have over twenty hits and twenty-five RBI’s between them.
Jacob Smith leads the league in runs scored and has been an excellent lead off batter throughout the year.
Northside has falling back and is in danger of being caught by the Peakes Tee Sluggers. Lead off hitter Nick Ryan and Dillon Doucette are two of the youngsters leading the Slugger charge. Ryan is second on the team in base hits and leads the team in stolen bases. Carter McGrath is definitely having his best season. McGrath has moved all the way to third place in league batting. He leads the team in hits, doubles, home runs and RBI’s.
The Sluggers run has moved them to within one game of the Brewers. With both teams trying for fourth place, it certainly looks like the first round re-match in the play-offs with the fourth place team hosting the fifth place team. Last year the Brewers beat the Sluggers in the opening round of the play-offs.
Morell Chevies have a firm grip on third place but there are still six games left on their schedule so they certainly are still focused on first place.
Charlottetown Cannons and Sherwood Dodgers are fighting for the six and seven position and the Cornwall Mud Hens and Paderno Pirates have their own little race going for the eight and final play-off position. The Cannons won twice on the weekend and the Dodgers lost two, so Charlottetown leads the Dodgers by a full game. The Mud Hens lost twice on Sunday and the Pirates lost once. Cornwall leads the Pirates by one game.
Future games. Plenty of games has the league tries to complete their season with schedule and make-up games.
On Wednesday the Dodgers play a huge game against the Cannons at Memorial field. The game starts at 6:30 and the Dodgers play once again at 8:30 against the Paderno Pirates.
The Chevies play the Brewers in Morell at 6;30 and Stratford is against the Sluggers in Peakes at 6:30.
Thursday evening another huge game pits Stratford against Morell. the game is Stratford’s home game but will be played in Morell. On Friday the Brewers host the Paderno Pirates at 6:30.
On Sunday August 14, the Brewers continue a hectic schedule against the Peakes Bombers in Morell.
Dominoes “Pizza Player of the Week... Rob Phelan of the Peakes Bombers. Phelan tossed a three hit shutout over the Chevies and had a grand slam home run against the Dodgers on Sunday.
Last Week’s Trivia... Garret VanDiepen hit his fourth triple of the season Friday night against PEI Youth Selects. He is one triple shy of tying a KCBL record for most triples in a season.
Who holds that record?
Jason Kowalski of the Pharmacy hit five triples in 2003 for the Stratford Pharmacy.
