Stratford Athletics Pharmacy now in driver's seat

Around the Bases by R. Daniel Shepard

The Stratford Athletics Pharmacy has the say on how the Kings County Baseball League will finish up.

Stratford improved their overall record to 18-4 and are getting closer to their first KCBL championship since 1998. The Pharmacy won two huge games over the past week.

Thursday evening in Morell, Stratford defeated the Northside Brewers 11-4. Stratford’s first five batters all reached base and scored to put the game away early.

On Sunday the Pharmacy and the Peakes Bombers engaged in yet another heated ball game. These two clubs are rivals to say the least and easily have the two teams with the most animosity towards each other. Besides the base stealing up by nine runs, the bean balls or bench clearing blowups, these two teams are entertaining fans with some old fashioned baseball.

Stratford scored four times in the third to open up a 5-0 lead. After a Bomber run in the bottom of the third, Randy Taylor homered in the fourth to restore the five run lead. Peakes scored single runs in the bottom of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and had the tying run at the plate before Josh Kirkpatrick got Colin Myers to ground out to short to end the game.

The rivalry goes back quite a few years for these two teams and each game gets it a little more intense. The Pharmacy definitely have the talent this year to take it all. The pitching staff is young and the offense has more than enough power. The only issue with the Pharmacy is that some of these gifted ball players excel in other sports and keeping the team as is throughout the season may be a challenge.

Lost in all the Bomber/Pharmacy thunder are the Morell Chevies. The Chevies continue to win and have moved into second place a half game ahead of the Peakes Bombers. The Chevies still can get the championship if they win their final two games against Stratford.

Grant Doyle regained the strikeout lead with 11 as Morell shut out Peakes Tee Sluggers 6-0 Sunday. On Monday evening Doyle struck out 15 Mud Hens in another complete game shut-out.
Another team on a win streak are the Charlottetown Cannons. The Cannons have won four in a row to my recollection. The wins have put the Cannons in a solid sixth place.

Plenty of undecided dates of schedule games upcoming as the all teams try to finish up its regular season.

Dominoes “Pizza player of the week” is Randy Taylor of the Stratford Pharmacy. Taylor had the three game version of the cycle in the last three Pharmacy games, all victories. Besides a pair of walks, Taylor singled, doubled, tripled and homered in six at bats.
