Top 10 Canadian Female Singers/Artists
Top 10 Canadian Female Singers/Artists
It’s difficult to have only the top 10 with so many talented, Canadian female artists in the running. I’ve been wanting to do this blog post for ages and have talked with many opinionated people about the prospects. I can’t justify the particular order of the list, though I don’t think many can dispute Anne Murray as #1 and leading “the way for a whole generations of Canadian divas…”
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention some of my favorite Canadian, singing gal talent such as Rose Cousins, Meaghan Blanchard, Jill Barber, Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards… And even Rita MacNeill, Natalie McMaster, k.d. lang, Diana Krall are legends, known throughout the world. Arg, this list could go on and on and on!!
I’d love for you to weigh in and let us know of anyone missing or who deserves a mention!

I found her once on youtube and I loved her! I want to buy her album, but I can't remember her name.
So glad to see other posts that mention people like Amanda and Chantal. Oh My Word ... how could they NOT be on the list. Unless I missed it in the comment though, there is one Canadian Female Voice that in my opinion could challenge the best of them today.
So I may be showing my age here but my vote for TOP Female Canadian Singer is LUBA. Anyone else remember that 80's hit "Everytime I See Your Picture I Cry", or when Luba did her cover of the classic hit "When A Man Loves A Woman". I saw her perform live twice and it was simply amazing. What a true talent she is!!
SASS JORDAN!!!!!!!!!!!
British born but Canadian
This list is Bullsh*t... lol
i can't even take you serious of professional !!
where's AMANDA MARSHALL ??
are you even CANADIAN??
lol she's the next best vocalist only to miss Celine Dion
haha Amanda Marshall is amazing. I just googled this to find her cause i havent heard her in so long and I was looking for one of her songs :) ty anonymnous
I can't take Celine Dion seriously, but even if I do admit she has talent, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, in their heyday, would be my choices for good Canadian singers.
Heart aren't canadian.....
Chantal Kreviazuk is a amazing singer/songwriter and a captivating performer. Sounds better than the cd
where is Chantal Kreviazuk? She's amazing and is a captivating performer. Sounds better than the cd.:)
Where is Loreena Mckennitt.
Really depends on your taste of music. No country singers for me please. I may lose everything that I worked so hard to get.
Out of your list here Joni ``her writng music skills ` , Celine `because I love to sing along with her`` are the only ones that I will take and run with. By the way its a guy posting this.
I'm not sure what part of Canada you live in but where I come from
K D Land would rate as #1 or maybe a tie with Anne . . .
Great list,
I would bump Feist up a few notches. My favourite Canadian female artist is Catherine MacLellan. She is a PEI's best kept secret.
I really like Jorane from Quebec. And, then there's an almost unknown artist named Thaneah in Alberta (who happens to know your beautiful aunt and Godmother Mae's hubby Lester!)...(Mae rocks too; the first time i heard "Bohemia", I was blown away!) Also, Chantal Kreviazuk (sp?)
Are you serious? Smart chick like you put Avril on your list.....uuugggggggg.
Carol Freaking Baker is better then Avril.
nutritionistPEI @moekerr- great post http://tinyurl.com/yc6gjh4 Another fantastic female #CanadianMusician 2 enjoy is @juliedoiron
Dawner2009 @moekerr @annemurray1 Hey ... what about kd lang??
You would have to be joking not to put K.D. Lang at the top or near the top of your list of Canadian vocalists at least in the popular music categories of jazz, blues, trad r&b, folk and pop absolutely regardless of your take on her philosophy, lifestyle or personal choices. The other notably absent singers that fit in this genre are to my mind Carol Welsman, Jackie Richardson and perhaps Angel Forrest out of Quebec. Don't forget about people like Edith Butler if you are going to talk Ann Murray.
If it is simply a popularity contest fair enough; if you are talking real talent then your list needs to be substantially altered. I also note you are missing some pretty exceptional classical and opera singers but in fairness I don't think that was really within the scope of this opinion piece.
