Time for a Good News Story on Education in PEI

peicanada.com -
One of the things you have to keep in mind about social media is that it's all about conversations. Facebook, Twitter, emails, etc. are conversations going on around the world 24/7. Last week I listened and became involved in many conversations regarding education on PEI. I had the pleasure of meeting with the Minister and Deputy Minister of Education and we discussed internet in schools, social media, educational technology, the importance of 21st Century Skills and the IT infrastructure for education in PEI. I had recently presented to the Advisory Council on Technology to the Minister of Education on using social ...

Cool Tools for the Classroom - Social Media for Education

peicanada.com -
The impetus for my foray into teaching an after school technology program for kids was discovering how little access my son had to computers when he was in grade 5. Despite having spent countless hours volunteering in his classroom for a number of years, it wasn't until I went overseas to Indonesia and visited the school where my brother was teaching at the time that I started asking questions and discovered my son was only getting 25 minutes in the computer lab every 6 - 10 - 20 days which was less than what I was getting 25 years ago ...

2010 Taste Our Island Award

Chef Stephen Hunter
I received this note yesterday and ask that if you are a foodie, as I am, then consider nominating your favorite PEI chef who you feel has been promoting local growers and producers.  I nominated my client and friend, Chef Stephen Hunter of the Victoria Village Inn, and he won first place last year!!  He is an amazing chef and takes great care and pride in buying the majority of his ingredients for his 2 diamond restaurant from local farmers and fishermen.   ...

Social Media = Conversations: PEI Education Case Study

Maureen Kerr Social Media
I was brought up in a house full of conversationalists - prolific, engaging, worldly people who, by their very nature, are compelled to draw out from anyone in an exchange of conversation, a common interest.  Although it wasn't necessarily in my genetic make-up (because I am adopted) to possess what I consider to be such a wonderful trait, it became inherent in me by nurture and subsequently a learned behavior that is being magnified through the use of social media. ...

Bridging the Gap

peicanada.com -
After reading Rob Paterson’s blog yesterday about the lack of jobs on PEI on for young people, it reminded me of my recent trip to Indonesia and touring the International School where my brother and sister-in-law teach. To say that I was a bit jealous of the facilities and resources available to the students of JIS is fairly accurate, however, it was more so of a wake-up call to what can be available to children, educators and parents if only they KNEW of the resources that are available. ...

My First CouchSurfer

peicanada.com -
I first heard about couchsurfing fairly recently from my friends, Dona and Vibhu, from California and India, respectively.  The couchsurfing website convinced me that it was a clever idea; with my up-coming trip to Indonesia and no official plan for accommodations while I wasn't staying with my brother, I decided to check it out. I passed it by a few other people and although it sounded somewhat risky, those reservations were quickly quashed once I read closely through their comprehensive site, www.couchsurfing.org and found enough compelling reasons why I should join. I left it too late and didn't get an opportunity ...

Red Clay Hills - VOTE!!

peicanada.com -
One of my favorite all-time songs is Red Clay Hills by my aunt Mae Moore. I've heard it covered by a number of people including Lennie Gallant and Christa Forgeron and I think they love it as much as I do because of how meaningful it is to anyone who lives on Prince Edward Island. Please vote for this song to be included on CBC's Essential East Coast Playlist.  Voting closes tomorrow, so tell your Island friends to vote and anyone else who loves this song :-)   http://www.cbc.ca/canada/prince-edward-island/story/2010/04/16/pei-f-east-coast-playlist-584.html%0A Picture thanks to wdrwilson of Flickr.com  From Mae Moore's website:   RED CLAY HILLS ...

A Glimpse of International Education

peicanada.com -
I'm sitting in a pub close by to my brother's house in Jakarta, having breakfast and checking out the 'net.  We came here after my brother and sister-in-law finished school yesterday, to have a beer after I had a little tour of the Jakarta International School campus.  My sister-in-law, Jocelyn, teaches junior high (middle school) math and my brother coaches the high school basketball team so I got to check out the gyms which were, from a former basketball player's perspective (yes, me!) pretty amazing.  The practice gym was bigger than my college's court (King's College in Halifax, NS). The ...

Living Large in South East Asia

Wow, over a week into my trip to south East Asia and I honestly have tried to blog but a) there hasn’t been a lot of time and b) I did write a long post one day and my computer crashed and I lost it.  It’s so beautiful here: the weather, where I’m staying in Jakarta, Bali, my niece and nephew, and I’ve been busy doing so many things: massages, spa, playing, swimming, shopping, yoga, eating, etc. I'm on my fourth book and have watched countless movies (on the flights) and even an episode of So You Can Think You Can ...
