The petty world of PEI politics

PrinceEdward Island is a province of 138,000 souls, sharing a provincial deficit of avery generous $35 million if you believe government, and a provincial debt inthe neighbourhood of $1.4 billion. Our farmers are in crisis. Our fishermen arein crisis. Our tourism industry is teetering. We've got serious issues keepingrural communities vibrant.

Given the host of issues we face, what compelling discussion did someone in the upperechelon of the Ghiz government waste time on - the colour of free tees at PEI'smoney losing provincial golf courses.

Yup,this year the colour of the season is red, as in Liberal red. Gone are the blueoutfits of the Binns years. Now staff members are required to  wear red windbreakersand red golf shirts. And yes, the tees are even red this year too.

Itis a typical example of wasteful thought and wasted money on behalf of the PEIDepartment of Tourism. This decision is not one you can hang on a bureaucrat. This is a political decision. If it wasn't made in the minister's office, itwas made further up the line in the Premier's office.

Talkabout dumb. Jackets don't wear out in a year, neither do most shirts.Welcome to PEI politics where it's more important to score petty, cheap politicalpoints than focus on big picture concepts like growing our province.

I heard someone compare politics on PEI to a banana republic - and I found this definition on wikipedia: "pejorative term for a small, often Latin American, Caribbean or African country that is politically unstable, dependent on limited agriculture (i.e. bananas), and ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy and corrupt clique."  A potato republic maybe.
