In a major marketing coup for tourism in Prince Edward Island, the Golf Channel is set to film the next edition of its highly popular reality show, Big Break, at Mill River Provincial Golf Course, The Graphic has confirmed.
It’s believed filming will take place during a two period in September. The Department of Tourism is holding a press conference Friday during which specific details will be announced.
Rumours have been rampant in recent days that something major was coming to the western PEI course, which has hosted national golfing events in the past. However, they all pale in comparison. Each season of the The Big Break consists of 10 hour-long episodes, with a two hour finale. Contestants compete in specialized skills competition with the eventual winner receiving some level of playing status on a professional tour. Since first airing in 2003 the Big Break has only once been filmed outside of the United States.
Government MLA Robert Henderson confirmed that the show will be coming here, although he did not know specific details. He said it will be a great event for the golf course and PEI tourism. It is unknown how much government money will be invested the show’s production.
Improvements are underway at Mill River to bring the course up to date for the filming. According to its Wikipedia site, the Golf Channel is available in 100 million homes worldwide. It is widely regarded at the definitive television channel for golf coverage.
