The severe winter storm, with 100 kilometer winds brought everything to a halt just before Christmas. While businesses closed and the Confederation Bridge was shut down to traffic, there were some things that were exposed to the worst of the elements.
Anna White of Charlottetown wasn’t aware the screen, which serves as the backdrop for movies shown every summer weekend at Princess Pat Drive-in, Cascumpec, had sustained damage as a result of hurricane force winds blowing off the Cascumpec Bay.
At least a third of the screen on the upper left side of the screen was missing from the frame with one inch thick plywood panels scattered on the ground in front.
Mrs White said the screen is not insured.
“One thing they don’t insure is the screen,” she said. “The wind must have been very strong off the water. I will have to go down and take a look.” She had no idea what the cost for repairs will be.
This is the 12th year Mrs White has operated the Princess Pat Drive-in, one of the two remaining drive-in theatres left operating in the province.
“I don’t know what I will do,” Mrs White said when asked if she would repair the damage and continue to operate in 2009.
“This was a poor summer,” she added. The number of movie goers dropped from previous years. Since she took over the family business there, she has been opening on weekends, offering double bills for movie enthusiasts who still drop by for an evening of entertainment.
The long weekend in May was once her opening date but with all the maintenance that’s needed every spring, the opening date has been later in recent years. This year there will be even more work to be done to repair the screen.
Mrs White runs the projector and does other tasks around the property, with one other person in the box office and one for the canteen.
