Agreeing with the church’s view
Editor:
First of all I must make clear that I have the utmost respect for Henry MacDougall and his strong faith in God. But there are some misconceptions in his letter (February 1, Eastern Graphic) that are incomplete. It appears to me that he is using every opportunity to take a cheap shot at the Catholic Church. Yes, what he says is true but he very conveniently forgets that the Bible was put together by members of the very church he usually criticizes. It was the inspired word of God that was interpreted and placed in book form for all to learn from.
So, the question needs to be asked again: Do we interpret the Bible as individuals or accept the teaching of the church that organized it and put it all together, while accepting that the Church is the sole entity responsible for the truths contained within it? Or do we accept Mr MacDougall’s view that the Bible is to be interpreted the way we want it to be understood as individuals?
I personally prefer to accept the view of the church, it has been here longer than me or Mr MacDougall.
Sincerely,
Paul Chandler,
Village Green
