Helen Lockerby’s Grade 6 students at Cardigan Consolidated were part of a celebration Thursday evening marking the end of this year’s Intensive Program at the school. As part of the event, the students showed their parents how much they’ve accomplished in the French language since starting the program in September. The students performed some of the activities and work they've done in class. Students attending the Intensive French program receive approximately three hours of instruction in the language from a literacy perspective including reading, speaking and writing, while the rest of their classes including science, gym, math and music are in English. The Intensive French program is currently being offered in Cardigan and Morell Consolidated Schools in the Eastern School District, as well as Bloomfield, O’Leary and Ellerslie Elementary Schools in the Western School District. The Department of Education is currently in discussions with the two boards about possibly expanding the program to other schools in the fall.
