Kevin MacKay, originally from Beach Point, is a top-10 finalist on the Think You’ve Got Talent Canada? CityTV contest.
Mr MacKay now lives in Waterloo, Ontario with his wife Melissa and daughters Menita, 5, and Kaylee, eight months.
People from all across Canada have submitted videos to the CityTV website to be voted on.
The 37 year-old singer and songwriter submitted a video of him performing his song “Peek-a-boo.”
“It’s about growing up way too fast, and I can relate to that because I have two daughters. And sometimes there’s a struggle between wishing to see your kids grow up too quickly and also wanting them to stay the way they are.
“I feel it’s one of the songs I’ve written that came together just really nicely, vocally and the melody, it’s a catchy tune. And I thought out of all the songs I’ve written in that past it had the best chance of getting noticed, so I gave it a shot.”
He has a broad range of musical influences, ranging from Great Big Sea and folk music to Metallica.
He’s been pleased with the response the public has given the song. Not every entry in the online talent show is musical - there’s also some soccer ball tricks, a beatboxer and a devil stick routine.
“I think mine is perhaps unique, in a different way, maybe that it’s a song really relating to families and children.
“I’m getting lots of votes from people all across Canada who hear it, and especially parents, it stands out for them because they can relate to it.”
It also got a warm reception closer to home.
“(My family) likes it a lot. My daughter (Menita) sings it all the time with me.”
Mr MacKay has been performing since 1998, and his debut solo CD Something More was nominated in Music PEI’s Spiritual Recording category.
The grand prize is a trip for two to see a taping of America's Got Talent in Los Angeles, and the winner's video would air on the show.
Mr MacKay thinks that would be great.
"It's my favourite show, we watch it every summer."
You can see and vote for the candidates at http://www.citytv.com/toronto/contest/77842--think-you-ve-got-talent-canada. Voting ends Friday and the winner will be notified by Monday, Mr MacKay said.
