The coveted symbol of hockey excellence in Canada, the Stanley Cup, is coming to eastern PEI as part of a province-wide tour during the Hockey Day in Canada celebrations from February 7-11.
Residents of Souris, Morell and Montague will have the chance to take pictures with the cup Thursday, February 9.
The first stop will be at Morell Consolidated in the morning followed by an appearance at the Wellness Centre in Montague and then the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris.
It will be the first time the cup has made an appearance in any of these communities and Souris for one is adding their own touch to the event said town events coordinator Joeanne Roche.
Make sure you bring your cameras she said.
Anyone is welcome to come and take pictures of the cup but a few lucky people will get the chance to have their picture taken with it.
Three names will be chosen from ballots collected at the town hall and the arena in the week leading up to the event.
The winners will be drawn two days before the cup arrives and those chosen have the option of having four other people get in the picture with them.
This is the first time the cup will travel across the Island without being accompanied by an NHL player and the organizing committee is encouraging everyone to don their favourite team jersey and head out to get their picture taken with the cup said committee chair Amanda Hammel.
“It’s really about celebrating that passion communities have for the game,” she said. The cup will be at Morell Consolidated School from 7:10am to 8:30am; Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague from 10:50am to 11:50am and at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.
