It could have much worse for Jonathan Tsamandanis, of Milltown Cross, on Tuesday afternoon. A grass fire ignited after Mr Tsamandanis tossed a cigarette butt into a small field beside his driveway. About 10 minutes later, he saw smoke and when he went outside he saw the fire and called the Montague Fire Department. In the meantime he attempted to put out the fire but to no avail. Eight volunteer firefighters quickly put out the blaze, which blackened the grass on the field but caused no other damage. Mr Tsamandanis thanked the fire department for preventing what could have been a worse situation, adding that he won’t be throwing cigarette butts on the ground anymore. David MacDonald photo
