Minigoo Fisheries opening in April

The first load of lobster to be processed at the new Minigoo Fisheries Ltd plant, in Lennox Island, will not be coming from PEI. It will be brought in the week of April 23 from Newfoundland, where the season opens on April 19. The plant’s official opening is April 21. Shortly afterwards the spring fishery on PEI kicks into high gear and Minigoo Fisheries officials expect to be purchasing lobster from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal fishermen from throughout the Island. Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Health and Wellness, responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, today announced that Ashley Jadis, Emily Ferguson and Amanda Malley are the first recipients of the 2009-2010 John J. The PEI Indian Residential School working group was formed about 18 months ago. The committee meets on the average every 6 to 8 weeks. Busy winter for Lennox Island Judo Club

This winter has been a busy one for the Lennox Island Judo club. Our group has gone to Montreal to train with Japaneese fighting sensation Kosei Inoue and Nicolas Gill (1st and 2nd at the 2nd last Olympics in Australia).  Then we practiced with Ontario Olympian Nicolas Tritton in Moncton.  Each camp was very different as both the camp conductors  have very unique styles of fighting.  Inoue is fancy and focuses on techniques that are fluid while Tritton’s style is rougher and more explosive.

In Atlantic Canada, hurricane season officially runs from June through November, bringing tropical depressions, tropical storms and occasionally hurricanes to the province. MCPEI to host 1st annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for St. Anne’s Church

The Mi’kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island (MCPEI) is hosting its first annual Charity Golf Tournament, a fundraiser for the restoration of St. Anne’s Church in Lennox Island. The golf tournament will begin with a shot gun start at 1pm on September 18, 2009 at Fox Meadow Golf and Country Club in Stratford. The Director of the section, and the Province’s first staff archaeologist is Dr. Helen Kristmanson. June 11th, marked the one year anniversary of the apology by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on behalf of the country to all of the survivors and their families of the residential school system. On July 19th, we will be having a Memorial Mass at Saint Anne’s Parish, Lennox Island, for Lemuel Labobe, his wife Madaline Bernard and their descendants. Lemuel Labobe was the son of Phillip Labobe and Elizabeth Lewis. Lemuel Labobe was born at Lennox Island on August1st 1876. He had two brothers Peter and Anthony Labobe. Madeline Bernard was the daughter of Joseph Bernard and Mary Ann Thompson. She was born on May 11, 1876 and died on January 6th. 1972. Lemuel Labobe, was a veteran of the First World War.
