National Aboriginal Awareness Week

With National Aboriginal Day comes the first day of summer and although it has not been all hot sunshiny days I am hopeful that it will be one great season for the Aboriginal people of PEI.  The dates have all been set for the traditional gatherings of the First Nations on and off reserve now and if the weather cooperates it will be one great summer of celebrating our culture and traditions.  In my mind I can see the grass dancer stomping his feet, and jingle dress dancers lightly bouncing up and down, and the drums and singers all taking part.  This year I have seen a renewal on both ends of the Island in the men’s drum groups, Lennox Island has their New Generation Singers again with Gilbert Sark and Abegweit’s Red Stone Drummers have come together for some major events over the year with three generations sitting at the drum at times and now with the creation of the new drum group Mi’kmaq Thunder this will be a summer of music and singing that will definately make the paper!  Come and see me if you have and story ideas or even if you remember a story you would like to share.   See you on the  other side of the camera!!
