The Government of PEI’s Department of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour has created a new section dealing with Archaeology and Aboriginal Affairs. The Director of the section, and the Province’s first staff archaeologist is Dr. Helen Kristmanson. The MCPEI and the new Archaeology and Aboriginal Affairs section are partnering this year on archaeological work of interest to both groups. The partnership also aims to develop capacity and foster interest in archaeology within the Island Mi’kmaq community.
A recent excavation of an Acadian pre-deportation site (occupied from 1728 to 1758) on Malpeque Bay, directed by Dr. Kristmanson, included an MCPEI-led contingent.
