CHARLOTTEOWN, AUGUST 6, 2009 – The following is a statement of condolence on the passing of Donald Marshall Jr. by Chief Darlene Bernard and Chief Brian Francis:
“Donald Marshall Jr. was a proud Mi’kmaq who fought racism and injustice. His tireless effort to bring about change continues to benefit Aboriginals today and will for many years to come.
Junior had many friends, colleagues and admirers in Prince Edward Island and his passing today leaves a void in our broad Mi’kmaq family.
While it was never his intention to seek the spotlight, his public fight for equality led to fundamental changes to the Canadian justice system and made him a champion for Aboriginal rights, not only in this region, but throughout our entire country.
He fought for what was right. He fought for those who couldn’t fight. All Mi’kmaq and Aboriginals throughout Canada owe him a debt of gratitude.
On behalf of the PEI Mi’kmaq, we extend our condolences to the family and friends of Donald Marshall Jr.”
