The Points East Coastal Drive will get a lot of exposure in Canada and the United States thanks to this display from the Island East Tourism Group. It was designed by Rijo Signs and installed on a Morley Annear Ltd trailer. Council needs to count to ten then act

Montague town council has a reputation for being a little bit controversial.
At the very least council meetings often make for good news stories, such as the recent increase to honorariums or the former council's mutiny against former mayor Pat McGowan.
Currently, council is divided on what to do with bylaw 2009-01 which allows councillors to appoint standing committees. Mayor Richard Collins and Councillor Peggy Whitlock hate it, Coun MacBeth loves it and the rest are on the fence, for now at least.
Now there’s nothing wrong with disagreement on council. Open, productive and healthy debate is a cornerstone of democracy.
This issue, however, is quickly becoming a power struggle. Coun MacBeth and to a greater degree Mayor Collins are spending a lot of political capital in this debate, pitting the rights of the mayor against the rights of council.

Campbell's Irving in Dundas is the oldest independent service station in the Maritimes

In 1960 John F Kennedy became President of the United States. Singer Ray Bono of U2 was born. Charlton Heston won Best Actor for his role in Ben-Hur. That same year, in a small town in eastern PEI, Clem Campbell opened a service station. Campbell’s Irving in the community of Dundas would become an important part of the community. In fact, it is now the oldest independent service station in the Maritimes. But success wasn’t certain. Clem’s son Gary, who now owns the station, recalls Clem’s father cautioning him against opening the store. The station itself wasn’t even completely finished when it opened. ...

Political forum lacked dazzle and vision

The Progressive Conservative leadership forum in Pooles Corner was friendly territory recently if you were a devoted Tory, and not-so-friendly if you were an equally committed Liberal.
Everybody in the room played the role of being confident of a Conservative win, even though the election isn’t for another year or so.
What was interesting about the forum was how none of the candidates really stood out from one another. Arguably, the only time they seemed to disagree was when Jamie Ballem went out on his own to say that the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission shouldn’t be scrapped, and when Fred McCardle cautioned against opposing decentralization of government services by pointing out that DVA and the Tax Centre were successful examples of government decentralization. Otherwise everyone seemed to be on the same page.

Whoo's luckier than this owl?

A very lucky owl has returned to his home, somewhere in the forest around Point Prim. Hubble-Hansen, a Great Horned Owl, was found injured by school bus driver Gar Gillis as he set off for school at 5:30am in early June. "He was helpless." The bird of prey, normally the terror of small mammals, was hopping and flapping its wings and could only raise himself a couple feet off the ground. Mr Gillis decided to help, talking to the bird as he approached. When he got closer, he saw that the left wing was out of place. "I said, ‘I’m not going to ...

The Montague Legion hosted a ceremony to commemorate National Peacekeeper Day recently. "It’s quite an honour for them to have it (at the Montague Legion)," Past President Deborah Smith said. "It was a lovely ceremony." A score of peacekeeping veterans and Legion members led a colour guard procession to the memorial at the Legion. Provincial Director of PEI Peacekeepers JD Murray said the day is an opportunity to remember those peacekeepers who gave their lives. He gave a speech in which he briefly outlined the history of the peacekeepers, and said their role in the world is "far from dead." While Canada cannot ...

Ghiz's attitude on health care is disgraceful

It was predictable but still disappointing to hear the new Chairman of Health PEI stating in one of his first speaking engagements at the Summerside Rotary Club that his first priority is to explain government policy on health care to the people of PEI. Premier Robert Ghiz should be ashamed of himself. It is the premier and his cabinet’s job to inform the people of government policy or cutbacks, it is not the newly appointed Health PEI board’s job. The board’s job is to manage the health system and to find ways to make it better. It comes as no surprise that ...
