Souris athletes win gold and silver at Nova Scotia provincials

 Lorne Blackett and Shelby McInnis of Souris were two of the athletes from Special Olympics PEI who recently competed in the Nova Scotia provincial games. Both won medals in gold and silver.

The 145th Highland Games and Scottish Festival was held over the weekend in Eldon, and like every year, the traditional Scottish sports proved to be a crowd favourite.
This year, Shawn Vincent of Lower Newtown (second from left) was the overall champion and was presented with the Jim MacNeill Memorial Trophy.

Kallan MacAulay, 3, was a little hesitant at first to pet Billy the turtle at the Children’s Day Festivities at the St Peter’s Bay campground during the annual Blueberry festival. Miss Northumberland 2009

Saturday was a winning night for Rebecca Hume, middle back row. The Murray River teenager was named Miss Northumberland 2009 and received top marks in the talent portion of the pageant in which she sang a solo. She is the daughter of Donna and Randy. The crowning also included Whitney Chapman, first runner up, daughter of Lori and Stephen, back left, and second runner up Michelle Hynes, back right. Ms Hynes, daughter of Valerie and David, received honourable mention for her ballet performance Friday night. In front are the flower presenters Aletra Dort, daughter of Jillian and Steven of White Sands and Gabe Harlan, son of Dreea and Shawn from Gladstone. Sarah MacLeod, daughter of Margaret and Roger, was singled out in the Evening Wear segment and Leah MacLean, daughter of Paula and Ted, was named Miss Friendship. Book Club Agent 009

Blake Downe of Fortune is one of the detectives in The TD Summer Reading Club at the Souris Library. This year's theme is Agent 009. The program runs for six weeks and is successful in inspiring children to spend more time reading books over the summer. Librarian Kathy MacEwen said on average 12 kids took part in the program which finishes August 11. Blake is the son of David and Wanda Downe.

Souris Bike Rodeo

Ten-year-old Sam Arseneau participated in a Bike Rodeo held Thursday afternoon at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris. Hosted by the Eastern Kings Sports Council and Cycle PEI, the rodeo was designed to teach youth proper bicycle safety, for instance always wearing a helmet which Sam earned top points for.
