      Holland College will build a new regional training centre in Alberton.  The official announcement will be made Wednesday, Mar 10 when Premier Robert Ghiz and Holland College President Dr Brian McMillan visit the town. In mid-January Alberton Mayor Mike Murphy announced that the town would be offering free land to Holland college as an incentive to build the new facility for West Prince in the town.       It’s called sea lettuce and it threatens to overwhelm shellfishing areas throughout PEI. The rapid growth and spread of this type of algae throughout productive Island waters has become an alarming trend for many who earn their living raising oysters, clams and quahogs, said John Powers of Alberton, president of the Prince County Shellfish Association (PCSA).       Until she tried a new treatment for a serious eye condition, Erma Ellis, 70, feared she was about to lose her independence. The Canada Road, Tyne Valley woman has wet age-related macular degeneration, which was steadily claiming her vision. The treatment she was undergoing wasn’t working. Then her Charlottetown specialist, Dr Suleiman Sefau, suggested she try Lucentis, a drug administered by injection into her eye. The cost for injections, close to $2,000 for each eye, are about $4,000 a month, she says. ...


Woman mugged in Alberton parking lot

West Prince RCMP officers are seeking the public's help apprehending an individual who robbed a woman in the Lion's Club parking lot shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday in Alberton.  The 39-year-old Alberton woman was struck in the face during a struggle, suffering minor injuries. The suspect escaped with the woman's purse and other items including a significant amount of cash. The purse and other items were eventually recovered, but not the cash. Katimavik volunteers ready to help

A new group of close to a dozen Katimavik volunteers are making Alberton their home for three weeks, and they are itching to try new work experiences. RCMP arrest man after weekend robbery

An Elmsdale man convicted of manslaughter in Ontario in 2002 and who has been on statutory release since May, 2009, was charged in connection with a robbery at an Alberton gas station shortly after 7:20 pm, Saturday, Jan 30. Correctional Service Canada issued a warrant of apprehension and suspended the man’s statutory release as a result of the incident. Michael Clarence Griffin, 47, was apprehended after a chase and charged with robbery following an incident in which a man entered Barbour’s Esso on Church Street demanding cash from an employee. A speeding motorist gave RCMP officers more than a few anxious moments on the roads of West Prince during noon hour Wednesday, Jan 20. At approximately 12:05 pm East Prince and West Prince RCMP officers received a complaint about a possible impaired driver travelling on the wrong side of the road at a high rate of speed. Few accidents in winter storm

Heavy snows, whipped by fierce winds, caused some anxious moments for RCMP officers in West Prince for much of Tuesday. But fortunately there were no serious calls, says Cpl. Kent MacKay of the West Prince RCMP. There were only three motorvehicle accidents on Tuesday, all single vehicle accidents with no injuries, he said. “We had three accidents in the past 24 hours, all due to road conditions.” Mr MacKay said RCMP answered two other calls on Tuesday evening - both false alarms likely related to weather conditions. Twenty-three firefighters and five fire vehicles were dispatched from the Alberton Fire Department shortly after 9:30 p.m Tuesday night to the Cascumpec Gas & Convenience store on Cascumpec Road. An alarm had sounded when one of the businesses’ three dryers malfunctioned and caught fire. Fortunately, the fire was contained before it could spread throughout the building, which houses a bakery, cafe and convenience store, as well as a gas bar.    Remembrance Day services were well attended in all West Prince communities this year. Surviving veterans attended church services and marched to cenotaphs. Many also laid wreathes in honour of fallen comrades. Lieutenant Governor Barbara Hagerman laid a wreath at the cenotaph in Alberton. She also attended a reception for veterans at the Royal Canadian Legion, St Anthony’s Branch No 27 and dinner at the Royal Canadian Legion, O’Leary Branch No 2.This year a special service was held in Lennox island honouring the Mi’kmaq veterans from that area.   A recount, completed shortly after 2 pm Thursday, Nov. 12, confirmed Michael Murphy’s narrow win in Alberton's mayoral race. Mr Murphy will be sworn in as the town’s mayor on Monday, Nov. 16. The recount was requested by challenger Natasha Gilks, who finished two votes behind Mr Murphy. Ms Gilks polled 220 votes to Mr Murphy’s 222.
