Nordic sites now open at local provincial park

  Islanders are encouraged to enjoy the Nordic skiing trails offered at Mill River Provincial Parks as a great way to get active and enjoy the beauty of Prince Edward Island, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Henderson.  “Our provincial parks offer Islanders and visitors a variety of fun activities to enjoy in all seasons,” said the minister. “Nordic skiing is a great way to enjoy the winter with family and friends.”  All three of the trails at Mill River Provincial Park are groomed and open for skiers. Brockton man charged for 2010 Kildare collision

On July 31th 2010 at approximately 11:30pm West Prince RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Route 12 in Kildare. A 2002 Yellow Dodge Viper had exited the road and rolled over. Both occupants were ejected. Island EMS attended and transported both occupants to Western Hospital. Due to the severity of their injuries both subjects were later transported to the Prince County Hospital. James Getson of Kildare Capes succumbed to his injuries. The other occupant was treated and then flown to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital by Life Flight in Halifax for further treatment. Alberton Fire Department also attended and assisted ...


Gas up, propane prices fall significantly

Motorists gassing up today will need to dig a little deeper into their pockets for the money following The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission petroleum pricing decisions, effective 12:01 am., Wednesday, Feb 1.  Gasoline prices increased by 1.5 cents per litre (cpl), while there were no changes in the price of furnace and stove oil. Meanwhile, diesel prices fell by one cent per litre. Propane prices fell even further, decreasing by 4.7 cpl for Superior Propane, by 5.1 cpl for Irving Energy Distribution and Marketing and by 3.7 cpl for Kenmac Energy Inc.  Including adjustments for taxes, pump prices for regular unleaded ...

Health PEI is in negotiations with two doctors (one male, one female) in the PEI Family Medicine Residency Program and things look encouraging so far for their full-time relocation to West Prince by sometime in July. That’s the word from Health PEI’s director of primary care networks and chronic disease prevention, Marilyn Barrett. There is a constant flow of doctors in and out of West Prince, but the area has managed to maintain its full, recommended complement of 12. Health PEI will not recruit above that level. ...

 Harvey Stewart, the West Point Volunteer Fire Department’s fire chief, says the ice for the PEI Pond Hockey Championship is probably the best it’s ever been in the event’s eight year history. The championship, to be held Feb 3-4, Friday and Saturday, is a major fundraiser for the West Point Fire Department. Mink farm fire ruled accidental, with cause and origin undetermined

Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Arsenault, after two days of extensive investigation, ruled a weekend fire in Seacow Pond to be “an accidental fire of undetermined cause and origin.” He concluded his investigation Tuesday at 2 pm. The deputy fire marshal said the massive destruction at the scene and extensive level of “fire suppression” needed to contain the blaze made it impossible to come to a determination about cause and origin. Anti-Bullying Charity Now accepting applications for national scholarship

Canada’s National Anti-Bullying Charity is now accepting applications for the organizations Scholarship Program.  The scholarship is open to students in their final year of high school who have worked to end bullying in their schools and communities to aid them with their post secondary education. The first round has three $100.00 scholarships, with more to follow in the months to come. Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Arsenault was unable to determine the cause and origin of a fire that consumed a barn and valuable equipment at a fox and mink ranch in Seacow Pond late Sunday afternoon and is returning Tuesday morning to continue his investigation. Casey Gavin, owner of Silver Hill Fur Farm, estimates the damage at more than a million dollars. But he considers himself lucky the damage wasn’t more devastating, considering there were homes and other structures in the area that could have caught fire. Man taken to hospital for smoke inhalation in fur farm fire

One man was taken to Western Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation during a fire which devastated Silver Hill Fur Farm in Seacow Pond late Sunday afternoon. The man, the business’s owner, was later released. The fire did not hurt any of the operation’s animals, including mink and foxes. Tignish Fire Chief Harley Perry said the fire is being investigated by the PEI Fire Marshal’s office Monday. Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured and the fire did not spread beyond the building that housed the animals’ food supply and equipment for cooking and mixing the feed, as well as farm tractors and feed carts.
