In response to the catastrophic flooding due to monsoon rains in Pakistan, the PEI government announced it will contribute $25,000 to the Canadian Red
Cross to assist in relief efforts.
“The victims of this flood desperately need assistance from
the global community, and I believe this contribution reflects the
concern felt by Islanders to help out those in need,” Premier Robert
Ghiz said.
The flooding, which has covered one-fifth of the country, has
killed 2,000 and affected 20 million people.  Millions remain homeless
and also are in need of food, clean drinking water, medicines and other
basic necessities of life.
“On behalf of Islanders, I express sincere condolences to
those who have lost loved ones, and our hope that survivors will be able
to overcome the challenges resulting from this disaster,” said Premier Ghiz.
Individual Islanders are encouraged to consider making a
donation and are reminded the Government of Canada has established
a Pakistan Flood Relief Fund, through which it will match eligible
citizen donations made to registered charities between Aug. 2 and
Sept. 12.
