PEI government provides $25,000 to Red Cross for flood-ravaged Pakistan

In response to the catastrophic flooding due to monsoon rains in Pakistan, the PEI government announced it will contribute $25,000 to the Canadian RedCross to assist in relief efforts.“The victims of this flood desperately need assistance fromthe global community, and I believe this contribution reflects theconcern felt by Islanders to help out those in need,” Premier RobertGhiz said.The flooding, which has covered one-fifth of the country, haskilled 2,000 and affected 20 million people. Millions remain homelessand also are in need of food, clean drinking water, medicines and otherbasic necessities of life.“On behalf of Islanders, I express sincere condolences tothose who have lost loved ones, and our hope that survivors will be ableto overcome the challenges resulting from this disaster,” said Premier Ghiz.Individual Islanders are encouraged to consider making adonation and are reminded the Government of Canada has establisheda Pakistan Flood Relief Fund, through which it will match eligiblecitizen donations made to registered charities between Aug. 2 andSept. 12.
