RCMP issues warning to illegal snowmobile operators

West Prince RCMP have received a number of complaints about illegal snowmobiling activities over the past week, including complaints about possible intoxicated operators.

The complaints starting coming when the snow deepened, said Cpl Dominique Cloutier.

“We’re starting to see them now that the snow is starting to stay,” he said.

The majority of the snowmobile-related calls appear to have come from Tignish, said Cpl Cloutier.

RCMP say reports have included complaints of snowmobile operators driving on homeowners’ property and not travelling on approved trails.

Officers want to head off potentially dangerous incidents by alerting those in the snowmobiling community who might be tempted to engage in illegal activities, he said.

“The RCMP are requesting that snowmobile operators respect both the rules of the trails and the private property of the members in their community. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated and will help ensure a safe winter season,” stated a news release.

Cpl Cloutier reminded snowmobile operators who drink and drive they face the same penalties under the Criminal Code as the operators of motorvehicles.
