Three West Prince communities - Alberton, O’Leary and Tignish - are on the schedule for the Stanley Cup’s visit during Hockey Day In Canada (Feb 7-10), celebrations on the Island.
The Cup will arrive in West Prince on Wednesday, Feb 8, visiting the Credit Union Arena, in Tignish, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, Alberton Elementary School, from 11:50 am to 12:50 pm and the O’Leary Community Sports Centre, from 1:10 pm to 2:10 pm.
“We are so excited to have this rare and unique opportunity to extend Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebrations to communities across the province with the Stanley Cup,” said Rob Newson, Chair of the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada Local Organizing Committee.
“While PEI has been fortunate to have hosted the Stanley Cup visit a few times with NHL Stanley Cup Champions, this relay is completely different as it’s about celebrating the passion our various communities have for the great game of hockey. The Stanley Cup is traveling to communities to celebrate communities.”
For the first time in the history of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada the Stanley Cup will be visiting communities across an entire province in the days leading up to the event’s broadcast day on Feb 11.
To accommodate the incredible public interest in the Stanley Cup, the local organizing committee has extended the relay by one stop which will see the relay start the evening of Tuesday, February 7th rather than the morning of Wednesday, February 8th.
Over the course of the four-day relay, the Stanley Cup will be traveling to 12 different communities from Tignish to Summerside to Charlottetown to Souris and points in between. The public will have several opportunities to see and get their picture taken with the Cup while it’s on PEI. Many of the communities hosting a Stanley Cup visit are planning activities around the exciting event.
