Westisle reach semi-finals in Nova Scotia tournament

Mon, 09/27/2010 - 10:18

This past weekend the Westisle Wolverines mens volleyball team traveled to Truro, NS to participate in the 10-team C.E.C. Cougar Invitational Tournament.  Most of the top teams from Nova Scotia participated and this made for some great early season action.

In division play, the Wolverines defeated Horton No 2 (Wolfville) 2-0 (25-14, 25-18) in their first match.  The second match pitted them against their long time rivals, and fellow Wolverines West Kings (Auburn, NS).  As usual it was a close and exciting contest with the Island Wolverines coming out on top of a (28-26, 27-25) score.  The next day, Westisle defeated C.P. Allen (Halifax) 2-0 (25-14, 25-14) in their first match of the morning and then lost to Sackville High 2-0 (17-25, 22-15).  Sackville has won the Nova Scotia Provincial AAA high school championship the past four years.  This left Sackville, West Kings, and Westisle all with 3-1 records and the tie breaking regulation was used to sort things out.  Westisle finished in third (plus/minus in points) and faced the host C.E.C Cougars in the 1 to 4 finals.  They came away with a 2-0 victory (25-18, 26-14) and the semifinals, got a rematch with the Sackville King Fishers.  After losing a close first game 22-25, the Wolverines rebounded back with a 25-19 win, forcing a third and deciding game.  They could not ride the emotional wave of their second game victory and fell behind 8-3 at the side change.  After this, both teams exchanged point for point but the slow start cost Westisle, going down 10-15.  However, the team played well, considering they were missing their starting setter and team captain Jeff Duggan who was attending a National Student Leadership Conference in Montreal.

Westisle, who are 4-0 in PEISAA League Play, and have an overall record of 13-2, will be busy again this coming week with two league matches and a trip to Montague Fall Festival of Sport Oct. 1-2.
